Sold my like new condition preban Sporter Target rifle in 2001 during the ban and had a good profit from it. I had a 6551 Sporter Target rifle that I bought new in '91, had large pivot hole, large FCG pins, magwell fence, no steel sear block, marked Colt's Mfg Co.

Probably Colt used the highest preban serial number SP on the Sporter Match HBAR lowers up to '94 (or even during the ban with higher postban numbers). It would appear Colt used up the last of their SP1 receivers early in the preban Sporter Match and Sporter Target series. Member Assaultrifler has a twin within a dozen or so numbers of mine. I have a Sporter Match HBAR I bought new in 1990 or 91, I forget now, that is large hole, standard fcg pins, slab sided with no sear block (a standard SP1 lower receiver except for the roll mark) numbered SP2497xx. I'm not sure if Colt have records of the SPII from 1982 up to 1989 but try to call Colt customer service if they could help with your R6500 Sporter II rifle year of production at 80 (Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm EST). In my opinion the last Sporter II rifle was made in '89 and that would have the serial number of SP360200 (and lower are considered preban), the next time they used the SP prefix was like on my SP6920 marked "Sporter M4 Carbine" made in early 2011 with serial number SP500XXX.

The book's list for the SP serial numbers only goes up to 1982 which are for the older model SP1 rifles only. Sorry about my poor memory, I thought Black Rifle II book had serial numbers of the Sporter II but they only shown one picture of SP325530 as a sample of their roll markings. Bartocci, but I don't have this book, they're available at Amazon and bookstores. I had seen the serial range number of the SP2 series, and other newer models listed on the book Black Rifle II, The M16 Into the 21st Century (2004) by Christopher R. The last late version the upper are A2 type with adjustable elevation rear sight, shell deflector and forward assist. Third version is like yours with the improved upper C7 type with shell deflector and forward assist (round button). The second version was like mine with the addition of the forward assist. The SP2 rifles changed upper receivers during their production run, the first early version had no shell deflector and no forward assist just like the older SP1 rifles.

SP2 series were made from around 1982 up to 1989, in 1988 they were replaced by the model R6550 AR-15A2 Gov't model rifle. I had a Sporter II rifle that I bought brand new in 1985, sorry I had no record of my serial number, mine had an upper receiver with teardrop forward assist and no case deflector.
